The dark brown gelding (1987, out of Kerry Gold by Lynfields Kiltuck) competed in Pony Club and showed hunters with Laryn Toups of The Woodlands, Texas. He then was purchased by Deana Eaton Blackburn, also of The Woodlands. Deana did most of the riding but liked that Karat also was a good mount for her tiny daughter. Karat was borrowed by a friend for a show after the friend’s horse was injured, and Karat came home with the championship, Deana said, sending a photo of Karat draped in four blue ribbons and a championship ribbon. Karat was trained in California by Mark Watring, who in 2003 won the gold medal in show jumping at the Pan Am Games.
