Lynfields Kiltuck, a black Connemara stallion, poses in 1981 at the St Louis National Charity Horse Show.

Lynfields Kiltuck was a mesmerizing black Connemara pony stallion that lived up to the Connemara motto of doing it all, while also siring more than 25 beautiful and talented offspring.

His bloodlines included thoroughbred Little Heaven as a grandsire and Irish show jumper Dundrum as an uncle. Kerrymor Farm is proud to shout that for all to hear because those genes were part of Kiltuck’s amazing beauty, ability and drive. On Kiltuck’s dam’s side, famed performance stallion An Tostal was another uncle.

With all those good genes, it’s little wonder that Kiltuck was everything the McKennas ever wanted and more. They would rename the farm for him if they planned to continue breeding horses.

Born at Lynfields Farm in Vermont, Kiltuck was a black, furry 3-month-old colt in 1975 when Joe and Joan McKenna visited the farm to see his sire (*Texas Hope) and purchase his dam (Round Robin’s Easter Bonnet). Joe insisted on buying Kiltuck, too.

Kiltuck started showing in hunter divisions at age 3 and later excelled in dressage, becoming Missouri Horse Shows Association (MHSA) training level champion and qualifying for the U.S. Dressage Federation (USDF) Region 4 Championship at first level in 1983.

He finished his performance career competing extensively in eventing in Arizona, always putting himself in contention with his dressage score and winning several blue ribbons at novice and training levels.

Kiltuck had fans and drew a crowd when he competed, especially in Arizona. His rider there was the celebrity’s wife; no one knew her name, but everyone knew Kiltuck.

In 2023, we found this slide of Lynfields Kiltuck that no one remembers seeing before, so we’re publishing it now. He really was a lovely pony. In the photo, he is competing in dressage in 1990 at WestWorld in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Many of Kiltuck’s foals went on to make their own mark on the breed. Perhaps the best known were Kerrymor Finbarr and Kerrymor Madison. The most common trait in all of Kiltuck’s babies was their pet-like personality. Yet, they all had that showmanship and competitive drive to perform and win.

Kiltuck himself was a total pet when it came to things like loading, clipping, walking over or through anything (bridges, garbage, water) and tying to the trailer for a day at a show.

He became quite a chatterbox as an older horse, keeping his groom in line to show up promptly for feedings and outings.

Some highlights from Kiltuck’s show career:

1978, 1979 and 1981: Champion in hand Connemara, St. Louis National Charity Horse Show.

1983: Qualified for USDF Region Four Championships in first level dressage.

1983: St. Louis Area Dressage Society horse of the year at training level.

1983: Missouri Horse Shows Association champion in training level dressage.

1990: Open training champion at Santa Rita Stables Horse Trials.

1990: Reserve champion Connemara, Bridlespur Charity Horse Show in St. Louis.
