Camus John’s Gladiator
Camus John’s Gladiator (1964, out of Oak Hill’s Nancy Jane by Camus John) was a prolific stallion. He was tied for the top Connemara stallion in the US with 99 offspring, as of Stud Book XVII, published in 1981. *Texas Hope also had 99 offspring through Stud Book XVII.
Gladiator spent time in the mid-1980s at Foxglove Farm in Laveen, Arizona. He produced Foxglove’s Oscar Wild, out of Paula, a wild mustang, in 1987.
Gladiator lived with Paula in the paddock shown in the photo (Paula is not shown) and was so quiet and laid back, one would never have known he was a stallion.
His foals and their offspring included many cherished Connemaras. Joan McKenna Jr. interacted with or rode many, and there were all forward, eager, athletic and kind Connemaras who could hold their own in open competition. Gladiator’s contributions to the American Connemara are immeasurable.
